Professor John J. Mearsheimer is known for his theory of offensive realism in international relations. He analyses South Africa’s 29 December 2023 application to the International Court of Justice (ICJ) urging the ICJ to declare Israel in breach of its obligations under the 1948 Genocide Convention, and accusing the Jewish State of genocide against Palestinians in Gaza. Professor Mearsheimer bases his analysis of the ICJ Genocide case on: 1) the brutality of the IDF and their indiscriminate killing of Palestinian civilians in Gaza; 2) the genocidal intent of Israel’s leadership; and 3) the complicity of the Biden administration in this genocide. Professor Mearsheimer is the co-author of the 2007 book “The Israel Lobby and US Foreign Policy”, which demonstrated the extraordinary power of this lobby on US politics.
